Robert Mims
 - Editing, Writing, Research

Writing:

In 30-plus years as a journalist, 18 of them at a major news wire service, my assignments have ranged from feature writing, in-depth reporting and breaking news on subjects as varied as business, medical-science, politics, environment, computers, sports, religion and history. In March 2007, I was promoted to an online newspaper editing position.

Editing:

My editing skills were honed as a wire service newsman, sports writer and  supervisor from 1980 to 1998, when I joined the staff of a metropolitan daily newspaper, working as a courts, religion, business and technology writer before moving to online edition editing duties.

Over the past 20 years, I have also extended my adventure with the written word to not only magazines, but ghostwriting and editing a number of books with biographical, inspirational, historical and sociological themes. More recently, I've tested the waters of technical writing and editing.

Awards, Honors, Education:

Awards for investigative reporting, column and sports writing and community service — and twice a  Pulitzer Prize finalist as a member of Associated Press national reporting teams covering the Mount St. Helen’s eruption and guardianship abuse of the elderly.

Numerous Society of Professional Journalists awards, among them a regional first place award for Religion Story of 2000.

In 2001, Finalist for the Templeton Prize, awarded by the Religion Newswriters Association to the top 10 religion writers in the country. In 2002, third in the national Cornell Prize competition for religion feature writing.

In 2003, lead writer for an investigative series on Utah's Goshute Indians that won both The Cowles Memorial Award for Investigative Journalism and the SPJ's regional “Special Projects” first place.

Graduated from Eastern Washington University in Winter, 1974, with a double-major bachelor’s degree in Journalism and History. I minored in psychology.

In 2000, I was awarded a fellowship to the University of Maryland, Knight Center for Journalism to study nonprofit entities. In 2005, I completed a series of courses from the American Press Institute on business journalism.

As an online editor for a leading Utah newspaper since 2007, I've help the website earn several first place awards for breaking news, content and community service.
